The Joy in Making

Saturday 21 September - Sunday 3 November2024

What do you do that brings you joy?

The process of making was hugely important for Arts and Crafts figures like C. R. Ashbee, both for producing quality pieces and for the wellbeing of the makers and craftspeople. However, making for happiness is not just for professional craftspeople. Our autumn exhibition will celebrate the craft, hobbies, creativity and activities which bring all of us joy every day – featuring the projects and stories of Court Barn’s very own volunteers!

Penny

Self-described Volunteer ‘Archive Rummager’

A trained and experienced librarian, Penny has worked all over the world and has a keen interest in family history research. She enjoys getting creative too; bringing her sewing skills and love of Star Trek to this sling she was given after an elbow operation. As a present for her sister’s 30th birthday she used petit point stitching to create the Guinness banner below – using 30,000 stitches! She has also experimented with abstract art, completing these colourful paintings at an art course in London

Geoff

Reception Volunteer Geoff has been an enthusiastic watercolour artist since he retired 25 years ago. He moved to Chipping Campden in 2003 and was an active member of the Stratford-upon-Avon Art Society, selling framed and mounted prints of his work at their exhibitions. He continues to attend meetings of the Chipping Campden Art Society in St James’ church rooms and loves painting local views.

Danny

Reception Volunteer

Danny loves pop music and was a volunteer DJ for the North Cotswold Community Radio station based in Chipping Campden. His radio show specialised in 80s music but he loves songs from all eras, collecting CDs and playing albums from his family’s collection of vinyl records. His favourites from this display are an early album from The Kinks, released in 1968, and a live album by Marvin Gaye.

Danny is also currently perfecting his poetry skills and enjoys writing about local landscapes.

Mary

Reception Volunteer and Tour Guide

Before she retired, Mary was a professional Blue Badge Tour Guide, guiding groups from all over the world around the Cotswolds and Stratford-upon-Avon. She still enjoys researching local history and gives guided tours along Chipping Campden High St as part of her Court Barn volunteering role.

Mary also gets hugely absorbed in her painting work, taking inspiration from botanical drawings of plants and local architecture.
